Adaptations through our 'Stay Active' Service

We can help tenants and other family members where an adaptation will improve their quality of life and help them live in their home as independently as possible.  This can range from minor work to major adaptations, such as alterations to give disabled access, provision of flush-floor showers or a ground floor extension.

If you would like to find out more, please e-mail russet.adaptations@russethomes.org or contact us on the Stay Active Help Line - 01732 781985 .

Minor Alterations     Major work     More Information

We carry out minor alterations which we fund through our own budgets. The sort of work that we can carry out includes:

  • Grab rails.
  • Vertical poles.
  • Individual door entry system.
  • Flashing light (door bell alert).
  • Socket outlet to charge mobility scooter.
  • Lever taps to the bath, wash basin and/or the kitchen sink.
  • Raised toilets.

We have a designated support officer who arranges home visits to discuss individual needs and identify suitable solutions. Once the work has been carried out she will undertake another visit to ensure the alterations have resolved or eased the difficulties.

Please click here for a copy of our leaflet, which provides more information about this service.

For larger adaptations we involve the Occupational Therapy Bureau and the Local Council's  Grants Officer, who will undertake a financial assessment to see if a Disabled Facilities Grant can be awarded.  Income and savings will be taken into account in asessing how much grant can be offered.    We can co-ordinate the work on behalf of the tenant  The key steps in the process are:

  • A referral to Kent County Council's Occupational Therapy Bureau (your Area Housing Officer or Housing Support Officer can do this for you).
  • A visit from an Occupational Therapist, who will identify the adaptations that are needed.
  • A referral to the local council, who will assess eligibility for Disabled Facillities Grant.
  • Preparation of plans and a specification.
  • Obtaining estimates for the work and submitting a formal application for Disabled Facilities Grant.
  • The adaptation works themselves, which will be supervised by one of our surveyors and 'signed off' by an Occupational Therapist.
